Then the cruisers show up and his squad is literally torn to shreds and eaten alive in front of him in mere moments if the flashbacks are any indication. After that, he was pretty much waiting to commit suicide by firing squad until he was persuaded to take this position instead.

True but the fact she was focused on seemed to give hers a bit more umph, which is hinted at in a few other pics like the solo pic of her human self (which I think had the pixiv description of "The smile I wanted to protect, the smile I couldn't save")
