Most likely the image on the left only covers augmented bones of his body, leaving the original bones not drawn. IIRC those bones shown is the ones one usually use in hand-to-hand combat, and modifying the spine has a lot of demerit compared to merit since mostly for bones, you need strength thus replacing them with metal composite is better, but for spine where you need a trio of strength, flexibility and ability to absorb impact, simply replacing all of spine where nerves thread in them are too hard.
