High in calories, and also tastes bad

Why do they still manufacture this then?

Because there are good reasons for a high-calorie diet, and still better to not down multiple of the things in a row since they are still empty calories.

There's that and there's here in PH where the daring will actually eat a single tablea chip and that thing is pure 100% roasted cacoa beans for the lulz (2-3 tablea "chips" can give you a heavy duty hot choco when you make em)

Army food is only supposed to give you energy. Nothing more nothing less

Because the army did not want the soldiers to eat them right away.

Because they'd be stolen if they tasted good, and sold on the black market on a base. This way you'll eat them to get calories to burn in the middle of an extended march but won't overindulge.

Y'know, I thought it wasn't that they intentionally made it taste bad, so much as they made taste a secondary consideration. Like, they took out the stuff that makes chocolate tasty because it would make it melt too easily.

Amphetamines give it that extra kick.

After some research, I found this:
D-bars were deliberately made nasty because they were meant to serve as emergency rations. If it was actually good then soldiers would eat them as their normal ration. But it seemed that the company in charge of making D-bars made them a bit too far.

Don't knock Dwarven bread, it's amazing how far a single loaf can get you. After all, if you don't find anything else to eat you'll have to eat the bread, and you can always use it as a hunting weapon in a pinch.

Colonel Logan, the man who aproched the Hershey company to make the D-Ration bar gave the following four requirements.

    The bar must:
    1. Weigh 4 ounces (113.4 g)
    2. Be high in food energy value
    3. Be able to withstand high temperatures
    4. Taste "a little better than a boiled potato"

I just checked with the regular, swiss low cost black chocolate, it stands at about 1750kcal for 340g. Calorie value are not written on the army's chocolate so I cannot tell. But since it's milk chocolate with cereals and caffeine I guess it would be higher
