I do not think that is smug, looks more like understanding sort of she knew Gambier might cry and she seems appreciative of the gesture though she may have hoped Gambier would not actually cry. For all we know Gambier may have requested to be brought here

It also looks like a bit of nostalgia to her. I mean it's an empty grave of her original, past warship life.

I'd heard an account that a Japanese destroyer came across the survivors of Gambier Bay and left them unmolested. That was Fujinami?
