Shame the movie was such a massive pile of poop.
It was supposed to save the mecha genre from the transformers movies, not join them.

It did fix some problems the first film had and implemented ideas del Toro mentioned in interviews. Unfortunately, it's plagued with new problems that ruin the whole movie for me.

Is not that bad. Is actually quite entertaining. The mecha battle scenes were awesome and much better than the ones from the first film (daylight shots and human point-of-view from the street/ground were awesome). My only complaint are the unnecessary plot twists. Mako Mori shouldn't have died...

I don't know... I kind of liked it. If you ignore things like plot and just focus on the coolness of giant robots punching giant monsters in the face, it actually becomes quite entertaining.

The only thing that was kind of bad about the movie for me was the teenagers... ugh... :p

In that case then what's the point of wasting money and 2 hours just to see 5 minutes of "cool stuffs"? You're not gonna care who loses, who wins, who lives, who dies or if the world's gonna blow up as long as you get to see big metal thing A punch big metal thing B. I'd rather just wait a month or so and watch that 5 minutes for free on Youtube instead.

Support the people who wants to improve the art or gave you an experience worthy of your money, not those who just wants a quick cashgrab.

LOL The movie is actually a rollercoaster. Is very action packed and has waaaaay more than just 5 minutes of mecha battles. In fact, it has even more battle scenes than the original film from 2013... Go watch it dude, you won't regret it. It is an o.k. mecha film, even with the bad plot twists and the teenagers...

BTW, it also has awesome young Clint Eastwood as a Jaeger pilot.

Specifically that last one is what ruins it for me. I could forgive immature humor and retcons, but not that.

Personally the 2nd movie was everything I feared the first would be before I saw it. I also disagree with many about the fight scenes, I felt they were bland and average for today's movies. It looked more like people fighting in a scaled down set of buildings than mecha fighting kaiju. If I wanted that, action movies are a dime a dozen (or more like $12 each at today's ticket prices). In the first one you could feel the mass of the robots and kaiju.

The mecha in the first were as much characters as the people piloting them and you felt it when they took damage. In the second, they might as well have not bothered naming them as there was no character to them. In the major fight of the 2nd, I actually lost track of which mecha was which a couple of times in the general melee, which should never have happened. I had little emotional investment when they were damaged or destroyed as well.

Was the movie bad? It could have been a lot worse. It also didn't come close to matching the first and was very disappointing.

The fight scenes are ok (though I wish there were more of them).

What I can't get behind though, is how terribly they did the tropes. The last person that died in the movie leaves 0 impact even though they tried to play it up. The mentor-mentee argued for a few minutes on how dangerous it would for the mentee to fight alongside the mentor and — after several dramatic moments — the mentor finally relented but it all ended with a "Not gonna work LOL, here's an alternative solution that doesn't require your mentee to begin with ;D".
