I'm pretty much getting the same impression as the downvoted commenters as well, here. I'm feeling that Gil really wanted his chance to fight, but Bunyan finished the battle before he could do anything.
Though I can't say that's the case for certain until the comic is translated.
It would be nice if Bunyan could just cut the fantasy "tree" in one go
