For the Zeta Gundam, the cockpit is exactly where it should be - the little coffin-like piece just below its chest armor in MS mode, flipping out to the "regular" aircraft cockpit location in the Waverider mode.

This realistically wouldn't even stay together in flight because of all the stress points from being a variable craft.

Personally, I'm concerned the chest area is essentially hollow in robot mode.
And the way those hip guards flip every which way around but never really seem to hold anything down.
