Small children are not born knowing how to care for your stuff. Kidproof what you can, teach them as best you can, and accept that there will still be the occasional peanut butter sandwich in the VCR.
That sounds way too specific. I can imagine that must've happened to you in real life.
Not to me personally - by the time our house had its first VCR, both me and my sister were old enough to know better than that - but it was a common story going around back in the day. No idea how often (if ever) such things actually happened, but it was the proverbial way for a small child to ruin a VCR.

I can confirm this happened AT LEAST once. My dad never did let me forget about that... (In my defense I was MAYBE 2 years old at the time)
