It's actually based on real world grenade launcher, with modernized stock.

You'd be right about the strange reloading scheme, due to several things:

1: Real world ammunition has something called a rim, that's providing grip to the extractor to help stabilize the cartridge when being shot, and also when it's ejected. In the picture, the bullets was shown to not have such things, just an oblong rod-like object. Due to the presence of the rim in the real world counterpart, one cannot load the ammunition from the front of the cartridge, because it won't fit.

2: Forward-opening break-open grenade launcher can theoretically prevent unwanted ignition of the ammunition, compared to back-opening ones. It's because the position of the primer: forward-opening ones will have the primer stayed safely in the barrel 100% of the time before it got fired, where back-opening ones will have a time where the primer is exposed briefly before the body of the gun reattached. In case of something hard got lodged between the gun parts when it closes, just closing the break-open parts could very well ignite the bullet.

The Soviet GP 25 and GP 30 underbarrel grenade launchers are muzzle loaded. So why shouldn't it work on a revolver type launcher? My problem with the design is: Where gets the quick loading device hold on the ammunition?
