Tilt your monitor back and look at it from the bottom, it's more normal that way.

The heavy abstraction that seems to be starting in fan art these days is kind of interesting. Sequential colouration can communicate quite a bit! Also I like how the relative 'proportions' of the colours here are all it takes to make it figurative, even if you haven't watched the anime.
