@Unbreakable: Prinz is actually speaking Norwegian here (she was stationed briefly at Norway during WWII), not Swedish. 'Japansk' would be correct there, except it should be written in lower-case (then again, this is a hard habit for a German to kick).

Well, she's a hybrid light cruiser/seaplane tender/minelayer. Considering her armament and intended role, it would be more accurate to describe her as a light cruiser with seaplane (and minelaying) capabilities instead of a seaplane tender with light cruiser guns, which is what she is represented as in game anyway.

And I think she spent most of her time as a light cruiser anyway (role-wise), especially after her AA refit.

Because as ships go, the Gotland-class Seaplane Cruisers (later remodelled into AA Cruisers), fell into the "Light Cruiser" tonnage.

Most people would probably think it's a mistake instead of another language anyway (at least that's what I think, since when you address somebody in Swedish, I don't think you expect them to reply in Norwegian. Especially since it was just a one word difference). I was momentarily confused too before reading Gotland's reply (and the clarification in the commentary).

Side note, even German would sound quite similar here (well, 'read', the actual sounds would differ more). "Guten Tag! Ich heiße Gotland. Wie heißt du?" "Kannst du Japanisch?" (with the caveat that the Germans take du/Sie usage more seriously than the Swedes treat du/ni, so it would be odd to address a stranger [not over the Internet] with 'du'.) Only here though, once you go beyond basic words (the 'thou' pronoun, 'call', 'can') almost everything becomes completely different. So, yeah, mostly just a happy coincidence.

Yeah, especially since Pudding probably has a German accent while speaking Norweigan. The assumption is generally that someone speaks your language, but with broken grammar, and I've heard a lot of people who speak more brokenly than that.

The only strange part is that she's introducing herself in Swedish to begin with. She's probably at least try it in English, if not Japanese if they're in Japan.

It wouldn't be out of the question to imagine that Gotland can speak German as well, or at least understand it. It's not too uncommon of a language to learn, since a lot of kids learn a third language in school (although most probably also forget it after school, since they don't use it much at all).

Somehow I get the impression that Munmu doesn't need an opportunity like that. It's more like reaction faces draw themselves. I mean, not understanding every European language is kind of a given for any European. It's monolinguals like Japanese and Americans who have those crazy reactions.

I find this amusing personally since Gotland dropped just a few tries after Prinz herself, therefore making the latter a senior but not by much.

I think it's because Japan is pretty much monocultural so most Japanese are unfamiliar with how people with different native languages speak. Other then, well, English speakers, who tend to speak in English anyway because they (rightly) assume that most people can understand at least a bit of English.

People with other native languages will also usually use English, because it is the current lingua franca. If they're familiar with the addressee language that might use it (especially for the easier stuff taught in Language 101 courses like how to introduce yourself), defaulting only to English for the harder, more complex stuff, and maybe using their native language (with attached explanations in English or the addressee's language) for more esoteric things like idioms and such (e.g. "in our country, we call this..."). Of course, there's the usual interjections (especially profanity) which may pop out if the speaker is emotional, and sometimes you'll see some idiosyncratic 'grammatisms' use of articles and plurals) creeping in.

In English media the above is exaggerated (to better denote that a character is 'foreign', but also because it's a genre expectation of sorts), so you see 'foreigners' dropping in words from their native language more often. Usually these are interjections, honorifics and articles (like a German using der/die/das, or a Russian not using any articles). Verbs and nouns also sometimes get substituted if they're visually (in printed media) or audibly (in voiced media) similar to the equivalent English phrase (so the reader/viewer can get the word. In-universe, this can be chalked up to a character's accent and substituting with a pronunciation he's more familiar with), like, say, using German Kultur in place of English 'culture'.

In Japanese media, however, the convention is... well, 'foreign characters' will use their native language to greet other people. And launch into extensive self-introductions using their native language. Before abruptly switching to fluent, accentless Japanese for the 'harder' stuff, opposite to what you would expect from someone who is just learning Japanese. They also do the 'interjection insertion' bit (this part is usually done well) and swapping out verb/nouns part (this part is usually done very poorly, often ending up with words with similar dictionary definitions but with completely different context. Worst is when they start swapping out words at random in an idiom or set phrase). So... yeah, Kancolle follows this genre convention, and most artists follow suit.

I'm under the impression that most Swedes are polyglots, with most of them being at least trilinguals. And even those who aren't trilingual can also manage three languages when cursing, because "fuck/Scheiße/Perkele!" are just too convenient not to use.

Oh right, I didn't put in a translation for the conversation between Gotland and Eugen, but it's nothing but simple stuff that can be easily understood from context, which is why I didn't put it in. Eugen is speaking Norwegian (apparently she stopped at port a few times there) though. The Swedish language is quite similar to Norwegian, as they are both closely-related languages (due to various reasons). Danish is the same too. Finnish is completely different though.

I've refrained from translating the commentary because the PS note in the middle is very noncommittal and requires some reading between the lines. The gist is that Munmu thinks the part under Gotland's eyes in the official art are her lower eyelashes, not shaded in shadows or anything, which is why he didn't give her bags under her eyes.

The top part is basically Munmu having a face_of_the_people_who_sank_all_their_money_into_the_fx moment because he farmed for Gotland in E-4 only to have another one fall into his lap while clearing E-5.

Might be wrong but it seems that Gotland's base form isn't treated as a CL in-game for routing and expedition purposes. Gotland Kai however, is.

I've been able to use Gotland (base) as a CL for several purposes, like in the escort fleet of a combined fleet, and a bunch of routing attempts worked out like she counts as a CL.

Probably a fair estimate. Almost everyone knows Swedish and English. Most know one other language either from school or from foreign family. Some know more than that.
