The Japanese proverb does map nicely to the English one* and the English version is one that has been relentlessly parodied to fit specific situations and references.
(*Granted, the Japanese one does have more of a nuance of 'protecting something important' at the expense of some sacrifices, while the English one leans towards more 'to achieve something...')

I was going to use the omelettes one, but I think I used it before for Ido, so was trying to change it up (and stop overuse), but that does work for comedy purposes...

It's still heavily intimating 'this is the only thing we have that can get what needs to get done, done' - so you can orientate towards either, as needs be.
