Everyone seems to think that Sonic could have escaped, if he hadn't slowed down to try helping Pikachu.
I'm of the opinion that even if he didn't slow down, he still would've been caught by the blast considering it engulfed the whole galaxy. That being said, him trying to help out Pikachu was a nice, and sad, touch.
