Considering how you guys on average only have 1 day out of every 10 where there isn't another mass shooting somewhere in the states, I don't really think automatic weapons are the best idea.

I'll keep it simple. The vast majority of 'shootings' occur with no casualties (albeit with injuries), most that do occur are gang related with illegally obtained firearms and their performed with handguns nearly every time.
Also, the US makes up less than 2 percent of the mass shootings in the world. So there's that.
Fun fact: guns are used for defensive purposes as opposed to criminal ones 60 to 1, which is nice, especially when you have State and City governments that handicap law enforcement for political brownie points.

If you are talking about shootings, shootings and other crime happen every day just like all countries all over the world. "Mass shooting" is a political term that doesn't actually have a real definition in criminal justice. The real term is called "mass murder" as the use of a gun doesn't make the death of an individual any more or less heinous. Overwhelmingly most of the violence and shootings in the US occur in localities where gun control is the strongest. LE departments and states which issue concealed carry permits widely tend to have the least amount of crime. Which makes sense as a criminal/terrorist are opportunists that are known to try and attack soft targets, not areas with high risk of failure, this also applies to fanatics and the mentally disturbed. Even the insane have to have a basic logical function to be capable of violence.
The most important fact demonstrating the pointlessness of gun control is that the banning of newly produced full auto weapons from being transferable has not stopped criminals from having and using full auto weapons. The BATFE for example, regularly confiscates illegal full auto weapons all over the country, and we only get the tip of the iceberg. In most cases when criminals don't use weapons it isn't that they can't get them, but they think it is not needed for their work since they expect the victims to be unarmed and defenseless.
We see similar lack of effectiveness in restriction with "rules of warfare". For example IED and NBC agents (CBRN) are against the laws of war, but it doesn't stop terrorists from using them.
I don't see too many people running around with water-cooled machine-guns committing crimes. I think, therefore, we should give all people water-cooled machine-guns as it favors the defense, thus preventing its use by never-do-wells and highwaymen.
