I've done that. But usually, I'm overleveled anyway. The trick to fight this is to have one of the two ships spawn right over where the trash mob would spawn. That way, when the offending trash mob doesn't and you can go your merry way...unless there's more than one place that the boss can spawn (which would both make the effort entirely useless and possobly place your ships in sich a place where the above comic happens anyway)

The tactic of using the second fleet at 0/5 doesn't *quite* work when you are in hard 85+ level fights. It can be done, but it ain't the easiest.
