I guess onions aren't really that appetizing for most people who have never tasted them properly cooked. Most people would eat it fresh, thereby having to contend with its sharp and pungent taste.
I never actually had onions done this way. Especially served with alcohol. But damn! I AM drooling just from remembering how salt sprinkled baked onions tasted.
