All that Winter is Coming, the Night King and the "old fairy tales coming back to take whats theirs" went nowhere so Dany can burn a city, Jaime can undo all of his character development in a single line, Jon can send his fucking doggo to Antarctica without even a hug, and the Wildlings deciding that they belong in Antarctica.
I know its hip to hate on the writers and they had a season to end what amounts to the last plot arc of the series, but this was the harsher torpedoing of a franchise since the Last Jedi.

On their way out the door, they sabotaged Time Warner, and sunk one of their most successful franchises. Except, the Showrunners/writers for GoT's actively sabotaged their story lines to get the season over with as soon as possible so they can go get the billions Disney is offering them for the SW:OR movie trilogy they intend o writing. The War of the long night, which was built up over all eight seasons *lasted one episode* and it was handled horribly. Daney's descent into madness wasn't forshadowed at all and it looked and was handled so ham fisted her actor was uncomfortable talking about it. Varius' death was so badly recieved by his actor, I bet the only reason he showed up at all for filming was his contract, and every episode just made more and more plotholes. ALSO JON DIDN'T HUG HIS DOGGO.

True but I would like to note that South Park was their baby and they had every right to. Game of thrones is an adaption of a novel series, one known for its intricate plotting and characters. A major, major theme is the White Walkers being this force that are above and beyond the politics that the rest of the continent is worried about. Things like "Dany just sort of forgot about the Iron Fleet." and shit like Jamie going back on every bit of character development he's had and the foundation of his character is clear that they gave no fucks about this project and were just wrapping things up.
I don't know if its confirmed, but it seems like a pretty solid way to torpedo a series, burn bridges, and get your name blacklisted.

Disney is evil. Quite possibly more evil than anyone realizes. Rather than being blacklisted, the Directors pulled a Griffith, selling their souls by destroying their allies, and gaining more than they'd ever hoped to obtain otherwise. Those two will never suffer for what they've done, they will never be held to account.

I *hated* World of Warcraft, but I kept going hoping it'd get better. It never did and the amount of money I spent on the game, well, let's just say it'd comfortably cover a console generation or two to add to the collection that will probably outlive myself. I did eventually break free of Blizzard, but it hurt and I miss the people I knew.
At any rate, I'm thoroughly convinced that the people in charge of these giant corporations controlling the media no longer look at things on an annual basis. They're thinking at least a generation ahead and are anticipating cost-covering measures that will pay-off long after you and are dead.
Also remember this; hunger is the best spice. Things taste better when you're starving. Same with boredom, when you're bored, things are more entertaining. It doesn't matter if they serve up crap, as long as they have a monopoly, they'll always have customers. Desperate, hungry, and bored customers.

The Skinner Box trap of something like WoW, (especially lootbox/gacha games that are deliberately designed by slot machine designers expressly to replace gambling because Millennials don't settle for mere slot machines any longer) is really something completely separate from a show, and really only the "FOMO" aspect is similar. It's actually pretty specifically because I'm fairly vulnerable to those same sorts of pressures that I tend to avoid MMOs, gacha games, or these ultra-hyped series like the plague.

That's certainly something that a company like Disney (as well as toy manufacturers like Hasbro or Mattel) lives by. They started releasing all these live action Disney movies to keep making money selling the "classics" that are now 100 years old to new generations, and to keep the Princess Collection in business. Disney had so much success with their Princess Collection stuff that they boasted that if they got a girl when they were young, they'd have them to adulthood, and especially after Frozen, Elsa dolls sold so well that they actually almost killed Barbie off for good because there wasn't room in the market for any other dolls whatsoever.
Disney only had the problem of wondering how to get boys the same way they got girls... well, what's popular with boys? Superheroes and Star Wars! Let's just buy those and start pumping out branded everything for every little boy to be eating Iron Man-Ohs in his Spiderman pajamas before stuffing his lightsaber pencils into his Yoda backpack.
It's not about the movies, it's about branding the merch.

Thing is... who's hungry for more television?
HBO had to make these blockbuster "everyone talks about it" type of television show because there's a flood in the market of television stations trying to produce content. Especially since the switch to HD raised production costs, every channel has had to choose between either a strategy of crass but dirt-cheap reality TV shows that can make money on mail order catheter and personal injury attorney ad revenue, or they can make over-produced high-budget DRAMA series that relies upon excited buzz and word of mouth to make up for the insane budget they're blowing on the show. People joke about HBO ending after Game of Thrones is over specifically because HBO has been running on this strategy of having people subscribe specifically for one series that is the most talked about show for a whole decade for, well, several decades, now.
Bored people watch reality TV, people scheduled busy lives around Game of Thrones episodes.
