I wouldn't be surprised. A quarter of my family was part of a fairly influential British family living in China when the Communists came to power. Almost all of them were hunted down and assassinated. Those that survived were brainwashed and their decedents are currently my enemies. I believe some of them were still killed later down the line even though their decedents were raised as true believers of the party. Of course, I don't have any personal relationship with them, although I do know who some of them are. It was a big reason my family chose to disown me when I decided to make fighting part of my career. They didn't want to the same thing to possibly happen to me, but I never cared about inheritance or stuff like that. More important IMO to make sure something like that never happens here at home for posterity.

I believe they were still doing work for the British Gov at the time and/or doing humanitarian services. I'm not privy to the politics or their reasons since pretty much everyone who knew why they stayed are dead right now. On that side of the family a lot of my relatives did a lot of work for various governments they belonged to, which is how my great great grandfather got citizenship to the US in return for vetting services against communists during the peak of the Cold War. Consequentially, I suspect those who remained in China were serving the British which is why they were not able to flee. Either that, or they were very naive thinking that communist rule would be tolerant of their social standing.

First, the author should be condemned for containing political bias in artworks. Do not criticize the Chinese government for conducting armed action at the protestors and mobs. If you compare such act to the 1932 Washington shooting when Douglas McArthur ordered his tanks and calvary troops to attack unarmed veterans, it could be understood why the PRC had to open fire at the protestors and mobs which caused the deaths of 100+ PLA and PAP soldiers, including my father. Just compare PRC to other countries which didn't open fire at the anti-communists in 1989 and 1991, and believed in the Western Democracy and Freedom. Ukraine became the worst country in Europe, and the GDP per capita of Georgia in 2020 is just the same as that in 1990. And also look at those countries which the US brought Freedom to, like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria.

My father himself and several other soldiers stood in front of those protestors, holding empty rifles. They were killed by those protestors and mobs using knives and molotov cocktails, and their bodies were destroyed and hanged on bridges.
