Considering how popular Three Houses is, I kinda expected this.
Popular? The damn game came out not even six months ago, decision to add them in had to have been made before release, certainly before the installation numbers justified it. This is just another bit of flagship nepotism, don’t pretend they have a good excuse for it.

Yeah, the Smash fanbase is looking very salty about this. On my part, I only wish my girl Bernie got some representation. Hype for this, however.

They don't pretend otherwise in the actual stream. Sakurai even admitted having to play a pre-release copy of Three Houses just to get a sense of who Byleth was and what (s)he could do, and he obviously could not have been a previous fan of a character he knew nothing about until then.
In any case, Smash has been an advertising vehicle since the beginning. Remember Roy making it into Melee as a hastily-made clone of Marth to shill for The Binding Blade prior to its release?

Not sure if many know of this, in fact some were prone to thinking Roy was originally a smash character (doesn't help that his game has yet to get any sort of English release)
And there's other FE characters joining as their games hit the limelight. Byleth was a matter of when and not if.

Too blatant too; Sakura wouldn't have released a character when the related company tweets something to happen on the same date.
I just love how salty everyone is acting, when they know full well they won't give a shit about all the drama half a week after the character is released. But keep up the salt. It's certainly not a childish look at all.
The only real problem I feel with their inclusion is the whole timing of it. Finishing an entire season of what felt like all guest fighters with a 1st party choice(let alone, Fire Emblem) wouldn't exactly bode well for a number of people. If they were 2nd or 3rd, or at least pushed to the second fighter's pass, it would've been fine.
They look like they'll be pretty dope to play as though, but I can help but feel(like others who've caught up on their moves) it would've been better suited for a Monster Hunter character finale...

i think this problem of "late" to much on announce was because of some problem with either ideas or licences too , and in the course of this , Byleth was already made it. So Sakurai had to push Byleth to the last spot just for complete the 1st fighter pass instead.
But all of this is just an speculation based on how everything end up.
It feels a lil odd to whine about another Fire Emblem character when there is plenty of Mario/Pokemon characters for example too. As for another swordy argument, they have a whip sword, axe, spear, and bow. I'll put them above the rest of the swordies any day. Granted, I think it would be great if we got non-sword ones in (Hector with his axe as an example), but eh. I say we vote in Cranky Kong. ;)
