The artist apologized about this on Twitter and took the post down

Okay, the infamous justification for a bloody crusade by an ambitious pope is causing a ruckus. By whom? Catholics? Islamists? Crusaders? REALLY old Palestinians?

After the whole "Teaching Japanese Artist nuance" for Nessa skin tone, i'm on boat when an artist decides to be an utter ass and not only by Not apologizing, but going scorched earth on their attackers.

The irony being that by and large in the Muslim world, the Crusades had little impact or infamy until this last century due to Islamism. You have people standing up and being offended for a people who are by and large indifferent to it.

Actually it wasn't, the comments from that Twitter thread were full of racist, /pol/ shit then when the artist takes it down people pretend it was because that image triggered people and proceed to post the artist commentary with absolutely no context.

I just feel bad for the artist, even with the context of disgusting right-wing folks popping up in the thread. Still no reason to go after her.

People sometimes channel their legitimate desires to be Just and Do Good into shit like policing fictional kinks to avoid having to actually change things in reality and effect real progress.

Which is what they should be doing rather than paying any mind to the Pepes.

It's true that there are some fools online who unironically support Deus Vult because of their hatred towards Islam, and some progressives would be worried that this phrase can serve as a pipeline to Fascism because of the normalization of the phrase, but I'd like to think that a majority of us are all sensible sorts who know the difference between right and wrong, between evil and an overused meme about templars. If someone wants to educate people on how this phrase could be used as a way to lure people into hateful attitudes, then that's fine, but in the context of this picture as done by a Chinese artist, the artist really does not mean any harm.

This situation reminds me of that Borat movie, where stupid people can agree with Borat and his cartoonishly sexist and racist attitudes, and normal people can see the movie as a satire on America, or just a gross-out film, not as idolizing the behavior that Borat has...

As you said, moslems themselves have no particular feelings toward crusades, so I doubt the strong reaction was due to the crusade imagery in itself but rather caused by how the catchphrase is used nowadays, by whom and in what kind of contexts.

Crusades are usually being brought up so the apologists can justify their bigotry towards middle-eastern refugees, which then leads to 'they deserve whatever happens to them now because crusades happened', so to speak.

Some stuff, you just have to learn to laugh at and not look for an offensive undertone or intended political or religious message. Just like here.

Edit coming much later: Yeah, this is why we can't have nice things. You feel obliged to attack anything and everything you don't like. Instead of downvoting, you should try to take this post as an advice.

I don't see how the Crusaders being incompetent can help the apologists that much. The First two crusades, especially, were more of a disaster for the Byzantines than anyone else.

Some would stop at nothing just to claim moral superiority in order to justify cruelty, including history revisionism.

As was intended. Roman-Catholics wanted to expand their influence in the Orthodox territories. It's actually one of the main reasons behind the initial crusades in the first place.

    Well yes but actually no.
The goal was very much Jerusalem, but they did quite a few "unchristian" things on their way there. They did go by land after all. A travelling army needs to feed itself, pay for upkeep and supplies, deal with boredom. They were little more than bandits marching for a cause.

As opposed to the Muslim Conquests initiated by the Prophet ?

Most armies are this; but in particular those of Islam had exactly the same justification --- starting in a vacuum, and claiming God's Desire --- as if a later Prophet, bearing in mind 19th century Americans' delight in massacring people not even with the excuse of war, had left Utah to march east capturing the States between to culminate in the Sack of New York.

    .

I am sorry this great artist apologised and that idiots impelled her to do so. Her greatness not being a factor of course, if a cheap artist is persecuted it is equally wicked.

As for the perfect cartoon, I had no idea this is a meme, nor that any SJW could find it offensive : I don't really have any feelings about the Crusades as a series, except that history is mainly people killing each other and the Crusaders and Muslims [ who hadn't even been in the Holy Land more than a few centuries and had conquered it just as the Crusaders sought to do ] were ordinary men each believing in their own justice, like Allies or Nazis, or any other competitors.

And sometimes that cigar is laced with poison. It looks like just a cigar and you'll never be the wiser until you use it which is what happened here. Literally minutes after the artist posted this the twitter thread got brigaded and turned into a cesspool.

One of the things that's bothersome is how, not just with this, but plenty of things online, we have intense black-and-white partisanship, with an apparent inability to have the bipartisan agreement of "memes aren't used uniformly and by one group only", since not everyone using a given meme may be using it as a dog whistle. Even more so, we should be working to disassociate memes with a given group rather than fully give them up to them, the 'perceived' enemy.

But vitriol and partisanship fuels the two-snaked ouroboros of the far right and the fauxgressives; forcing others to pick a side, or, if not pick one themselves, then have it picked for them.

The controversy probably has little to do with the actual crusades and more to do with this being perceived as a far-right meme.

in any case, people probably shouldn't suggest stuff to her that's going to cause a fight in her replies

Deranged leftists are willing to declare anything a "far-right meme" so they can control discussion as they like, see Pepe and many other things. It's been like this for years.

And please don't fucking deflect, she took it down because rabid Tumblr refugees harassed her into doing so. These are the same kind of people that were happy to harass someone to suicide because they drew a Steven Universe character with a lighter skin tone. (I wish I was exaggerating.)

That thing just has a condescending tone to it. Maybe I should make a "Teaching Americans to be Tolerant", and write it in a scornful, condescending tone, as if I was talking to a bunch of underage kids, because that's really the vibe I get from your Nessa thingy. It's condescending, generalizing, and smells of a holier-than-you fart gas.

Except this actually was a far right meme and i think you know that. That's the thing about far right memes they're full of innocuous shit that at first blush look like they don't mean anything until actually look into it. Pepe got coopted into the far right sphere which once again you would know since its very hard not to realize that.

Come to think of it. If artist didn't say anything, she can just draw Allahu Akbar Saracen Kaguya (everything about Kaguya are just perfect for this role). I think that way she can weasel her way out much easier and everyone is happy.

Nothing to be accepting about really it's just people seeing the meme and remembering years of religious induced genocide like the other thousand times, but it was Jews so I don't really care, kek.
