Merlin isn't a Grand, he's a candidate, like Gilgamesh's Caster form. the only confirmed Grand Caster (of which there is only one per class) was Solomon.

That's probably why he's holding up the Solomon cutout. Merlin's not wearing a party hat.

But the fgo material says that Merlin became the grand caster after Solomon's sacrifice...

Here's the thing: Merlin hasn't actually "died" yet

If he has, it's likely that the world can put him in the Grand Saint Graph

I mean, he's a product of the world and as a resident of the Other Side will die with it, and we know the world is dead in Notes, whereas the Throne of Heroes exists beyond the World as part of the Root, which is also outside of time, so there's at least one dead Merlin right there

He's eternally trapped on Avalon, an island where no one can die.

Only until Avalon ceases to exist, which it will when the World of which it is a part dies

Is that how it works? I thought Dun Scaith and Avalon are edge cases in regards to Human History Incineration but Scathach appears in FGO because Dun Scaith *might* get caught in it and Merlin appears because he can break basically any rule when he applies himself.

Unknown. Human History being incinerated=/= The World dying. Dun Scaith and Avalon are sorta inbetween the layer humans are on and the Other Side, and so might get out free with the rest of said Other Side depending on how that works, but they're dead as doornails if things go full Notes and Gaia croaks.

Avalon and Dun Scaith are different cases : Dun Scaith is close enough to the "surface world" that it got burned along, thus why Scathach is summonable as a Servant in the events of FGO, whereas Avalon is truly a protected realm (the descriptions say even the 5 True Magics can't breach it), so Merlin can only "escape" it by being summoned as a Servant in an era BEFORE his birth, at a time when he is technically not alive.
