Would someone please explain to me why people insist on calling Shirou an idiot? I've played through Fate, UBW, and most of Heaven's Feel and the only time I've ever thought he was being stupid was being overly protective of Saber, and even that was justifiable given her weakened condition through most of the story.

The Fool does not represent "Idiocy", same as the The Death does not represent actual "Death"

So this card does suit him, from what I've seen with the series.

Oh? Then what does the Hanged Man represent?

"Sacrifice" is a noticeable theme for it, putting others before himself.

Although they did play it straight with the name of The Fool in this set, since they made it to be Shinji.

The Fool is supposed to represent a beginning, and limitless potential... but Shinji is all too limited in so many ways.

I always thought he was stupid because everything would be explained to him 5 or 6 times and he'd repeat it back again each time.

Yeah, but that really doesn't have much to do with the meaning of the card The Fool, let alone The Hanged Man.

I agree that Shirou's dense as hell, though.

I chalked this up to a quirk of the narration more than stupidity on Shirou's part. I seem to recall Tohno Shiki asking Arcuied if she was *really* a vampire something like 15 times in Arc's route in Tsukihime but nobody ever calls him an idiot.

When you get to the bit where Shirou is trying to escape from Illya's room in Fate, choose "Hide under the bed". It speaks for itself

So in other words the player's choices are what make him an idiot? Guess that explains why I never got a Dead End in UBW.

"People die if they killed" - he said with a difficult expression on his face. Thank you, Captain Obvious! It's kinda funny and became meme, that's why he's idiot)

Getting killed is not really a good way to die in Anime.

Mwu got killed, look at him!

The reason people think Shirou is thick is because:

While actually a play on a idiom that describes incredibly tough people who "won't die if they're killed" , the quip was literally intepreted.

So basically Shirou was saying in my opinion - or it's what i think they wanted to get across that, servants don't die when they are killed (which they don't because they are legends and merely go back to the timeless place that servants reside in) so in assumption, technically "Servants don't die when they are killed". It's actually simple if you think about it, but its a meme now so what can we do lol. I still like Shirou and after playing the game don't see him as an idiot, realistically, it would be hard to take in all the events of the holy grail war, so its not like hes stupid, just trying to make sense of complex magic workings.

I do think that The Fool would have suited Shirou better, since at the beginning of the story, he was naive, headstrong, immature, and ready for growth and experience.

On the other hand, the Hanged Man implies a sacrifice in order for change to occur, which also fits Shirou, I guess.

Why do people keep coming back to the line 'people die when they are killed' when they say Shirou is stupid? Tohsaka was the one that said that...

This is hilarious considering how many times you can see Chibi-Shirou hanged from his neck in the Tiger Dojo

In the game maybe, but a lot of people in the States and elsewhere have only seen the anime, which tends to show Shirou at his worst and doesn't give him any of the character development that UBW and Heaven's Feel give him. These are probably the same people who keep passing around the "Fate/Stay In The Kitchen" meme.
