The sign on the upper picture reads "tsuyu" (つゆ), while on the lower one it reads "dzuyu" (づゆ), however I have no idea what those mean in Japanese.

つゆ (梅雨) is the rainy season, usually lasting from early June to mid-July. づゆ, as far as I can tell, doesn't mean anything; it's just there because it represents a small change in the sign, a bit like altering "the" to "fhe".
