Note: Pretty sure Altair actually can swim, it's just that the animus(mos?) couldn't let him. Vaguely remember him getting thrown off a boat and having to swim to shore in the DS prequel which ended up costing his first love's life or something.

in AC lore the Animus software that Desmond was stuck into couldnt simulate water/swimming very well so abstergo decided to just go screw it and surrendered and chuck out the software anyway...

Can unlock embedded genetic memories from ancestors dozens of generations previous, allowing the descendants to experience those past lives. Can’t simulate water physics and the action of humans swimming. (At least initially.)

Water physics are no joke, it took game devs forever to figure it out without destroying framerates.
