Sakuya may be thinking more about appearances, then. I mean, wouldn't you kinda look bad if your gate guard was always asleep on the job?

I think it's just a offshoot of the gag that Meiling's useless as a door guard (due to how easy marisa gets in all the time.... then again I suspect half the time China gets a face full of master spark when she tries)
According to Perfect Memento in Strict Sense(東方求聞史紀), China will wake up as soon as someone trying to sneak pass her while she sleeping on the job. If the trespasser apologized politely and get out immediately, nothing will happen to him. Or the outraged China will choose to beat the shit outta him. One can either try to sneak in the mansion in some other ways or chanllenge her and win the fight. There are actually a lot of chanllengers and Remilia enjoy the fight very much. However, just like Touhou 6, the winner still have to go through Sakuya and Patchuli before he can meet Remilia.

Which I find odd, unless the house is purposely set up so that you have to get through the library to get to the rest of the house if you come in through the front door.

They're gender-neutral pronouns. They may not seem like it to you since you're probably more used to the phrase "he or she", but in standard English it's perfectly fine.

All right... until the end. I doubt you have to go through the library to get to Remi. You probably do have to go through Sakuya to get to Remi though, espeacially if you plan to harm her.
