She reached 1 million subscribers in nearly a month of her first posting. I am not sure if that is a record but it IS amazing she reached it so quickly and had (as far as we know) zero prior experience being on youtube much less a Vtuber.

Without being a corporate influencer artificially propped up by youtube itself? Gura doesn't do product placement, life-style, or politics, so she's probably legit.

Nah, Gura had a channel before this with a million subs as well. As far as I know, the only 2 we don't know their prior identities of are Kiara and Callie. Hell, Amelia used to be a Twitch streamer and still has a lot of her clips up.

Those two's roommates are well known within certain circles. Voices were quite recognizable. Not to mention being trilingual in this scene narrows it down. I find it interesting you're quite confident about Amelia who within my circles is less known.

Let's not discuss past identities here. This will only lead to doxxing.

Maybe it's pedantics but I don't really know how discussing one Youtube identity being the same person with another Youtube identity is doxxing. It's not like either identities have their real life address, name or face on there. Especially in Gura's case where both channels she has are over 1M subs so if anything it's an open-secret and all X-Sam did was say Gura did have previous streaming experiences.

It's as doxxing as anything on the seiyuu_connection tag.

Not really? But it may cause headaches at most for staff (and that is me giving all of us waayyyyyyyy too much credit). Hololive ain't just gonna fire a golden goose. No one with any business sense would do that due to a genuine open secret.

It is super easy to identify her. And if these tiny posts that don't even cause a single ripple at all could do something like getting her fired, then Coco would have been fired almost at the start of her career.

Edit. Not gonna say you should say her name here or anything. Just saying that you are over-exaggerating by a mile.

Ignoring the previous identity thing, one thing is clear:

Gura clearly chose correctly when she decided to be a cute shark girl.

If that's the case why are people acting all vague and mildly smug about this. The way they were phrasing it I assumed that it was somehow common knowledge that I just missed given that I am only mildly into the Hololive scene. If it’s going to get people in trouble why the hell is getting brought up like this other then to bait people like me... Unless this some sort of "Haha I know something you all don’t. So now I’m going to act all smart and smug about it."

Again, this discussion is off-topic. Please drop the subject and don't talk about past identities here, even if they're not considered a huge secret. If you wouldn't talk about it on their Youtube channel, or on official forums like the Hololive subreddit, then don't talk about it here. There are other sites where you can go if you really want to talk about this.

Vagueposting only makes people more curious and only baits people into talking about it more. Having seen what goes on in other communities where these discussions are allowed, it's best to not allow them to even start. I'll just say that most of them have had their real identities doxxed to varying degrees, and at least one of them has faced problems because of it. Allowing these discussions only leads to people going further and further until it's not vagueposting any more, everyone's openly talking about their identities in every thread, all because of this attitude of "it's okay, everyone already knows and everyone else is talking about it".

It's not a banned topic, and at least I think it's only in your head if you think everyone is being smug about it. It's just rude to the actor is all.

Like if you see Adam Driver or Robert Downey Jr. in non-Star Wars and non-Marvel movies, it's fine to call them "Kylo Ren" or "Ironman" when talking on Youtube or among your friends because that's just how the layman know them as. And it's the role I also assume they were proud to have played.

But imagine if you're talking to the actual Adam Driver or RDJ in an interview about their non-Star Wars and non-Marvel movies, that'd come off rude. It's like saying "no matter how great your acting skills is I can't unsee you as Kylo and Ironman."

That's why I think it's only a problem if you have a risk of being seen by the actual actor. (I presume) Adam Driver and RDJ aren't ever going to dig through Youtube comments, so it's fine there for them. But Vtubers are different in that Youtube is their platform and many of them are also known to go on Reddit, so it would be just rude to call them on those sites by their previous role when currently they are taking on a newer one.

That's why personally I think it'd be okay to talk about Gura's past identities here. Again, I don't see how it's anymore doxxing than the seiyuu_connection tag, because that's literally what it is, two characters sharing an actor. No one's gonna blame me for anything if I talk about DIO on FGO Ozymandias post, are they?

And on the matter of vagueposting, I also don't think it's toxic if it's this open. I mean if someone hated an online entity enough to want to dox them, people talking vaguely wouldn't be the barrier stopping them. We're not badmouthing either of Gura's identities, and again this entire conversation only started because someone said Gura has past streaming experiences, which is as neutral of a statement as can be.

If anything, if you think curiosity is the toxic trigger, then this attitude of hard censoring even neutral statements from being made at all would only make discussing alternate identities far more controversial than it is(again, to me it's only a matter of being rude when there is a risk of the actor listening in), and as cokerpilot said, make people who know appears more smug(and therefore more hostile) for no reason.

    Stuff

I think it should be the same way we treat artist when they use Pen-names for H-content or when Seiyuu use a different alias when voicing R-18 related content. If you know, then its good that you know. No need to go crazy and try to coyly tell it to everyone, being a huge douchebag about it especially if the person themselves don't want any mention of said deeds.

Even if it "hurts" nobody, it's still a pain in the ass to see people acting all smug as if they know everything about said person and keep trying to bait people to find her identity. I've seen that shit way too much in Youtube and even parts of Reddit, of people just being dickheads. Hell, even 4chan doesn't do that shit as much as those two sites and it says alot (although its mostly because 4chan doesn't seem to be a fan of the EN girls all that much).

No one is censoring, but its common curtsy to say the less. The same thing we do with spoilers, really. Not everyone want to know about certain things so it would be better if everyone just keep the big secret to themselves and maybe act smug quietly instead.

It's weird that this hasn't been said yet, but the comparison to seiyuu_connection doesn't make sense. This isn't a case where you know two characters have the same VA because the credits showed their name. This is a case where the VA's name is being hidden on purpose and you're analyzing two characters' voices to find out if they're the same.

Even if this shit isn't doxing, it's at the very least gossip. And the idea of gossip only being rude if the subject of it is listening makes no sense.

Kinda my point. It's better if you don't talk about it, but if someone brought it up on a neutral terms and everyone is civilized about the matter, I don't see why this is a matter that deserves to be censored.

People can be a smug asshole about it, sure. But people can be a smug asshole about a million other things as well. And it's not like Gura goes back to close the comment section of her old account to prevent people from very, very openly talking about her identity as Gawr Gura, so I see even less reasons why this is treated as an absolutely forbidden subject.

    JoesT said:

It's gossipping somewhere they will never hear VS. gossiping right in their earshot. How do you not see how one is far less acceptable than the others? Especially since our "gosssipping" here isn't even badmouthing at all.

It's the same reason it's an etiquette to not bring up other Vtubers name during live chat unless the streamer brought it up themselves. Or it's incredibly assholish to tell them you're turning their stream off because someone else started streaming. They're supposed to be the center of the show at the time and bringing someone else up would just be saying like they're not good enough for your attention. Like Matsuri said, even if it's praising her, she despises people who go to other people's streams to say "Matsuri sing this song better" or whatever.

Gura is supposed to be Gawr Gura, so trying to even implicate that she's not right on her own videos is rude, but otherwise if it's not on Gura's videos, it's fine to talk less about the Gura character and more about the person behind the avatar.

These people aren't "hiding" their alt accounts either, hence the open secret. It's common even among other Hololive members, especially ones whose alt-account is still active. And don't you think a creator would have preferred it if you're subscribed to both accounts and like both of their acts instead of pretending to treat one account as being the sole "one true version" while another is "disgusting and should never be looked at"?
