That was very sad, and very well done. Not every day you see a colored job

and the little girl isn't Chen, she doesn't have tails or cat ears. Ir's Reimu's grandaughter, I think. Doesn't look old enough to be her daughter.

I know, there should have been cars and explosions and males in homoerotic scenes and pistols and women in little clothing and neon lights.
Dying with a smile on her face, in company of one of the persons who changed her life is soooo lame.

Finished up the translation, though it's not very clear in parts. The usage of yuzuru (give, concede) doesn't make a lot of sense and there may be some part of oni or Touhou lore that I'm missing.

Who dies at 60, looking 80? Looks like her liver really was in bad shape...

BTW, isn't note #81623 kind of made up? AFAICS she never mentions that they're "at least as old" as her, she just says that it's only ever youkai that come to visit.

Well, you go fighting off goddesses, demons, nuclear hell crows and people who can throw speeding trains at you out of thin air, and see how well you age.

Why is this in the Soul-Crushingly Depressing pool? It's sad that Reimu died, but this should be Heartwarming. Reimu lived a good life and died peacefully and happily in the company of friends. She faced the end with no real regrets. Yukari gave her a fond farewell. It's a fine way to end one's life.

If she died alone and afraid with no friends and only hell or oblivion to look forward to, *that* is Soul-Crushingly Depressing.

Further on we see through flashback that this Reimu was hosting a party/festival where many of the cast showed up to join in. So signs point to the grandchild being someone we've never seen before.

The myth that PC98 Reimu and post-EoSD Reimu is a different person is fan-made and based ENTIRELY on the fact ZUN used different kanji for her. Almost everything suggests that they are the same person and ZUN even refers to the 98 Reimu with the new kanji.

I find this myth probably the most stupid and annoying part of the fandom bullshit I've seen until now.

To be fair, that theory is based on the simple fact that her being the same Reimu makes no sense. Alice's history was changed in such a way that it makes no sense from the PC-98 days and many have tried to come up with an explanation, meanwhile Mima and Genji are both supposed to be living at the shrine yet we heard nothing from them when Tenshi destroyed it (you'd think Mima would either trash Tenshi or at least laugh at Reimu). Lots of little plot holes like that is where people get this theory from and to be fair ZUN never officially confirmed it either way.

    Sad? Yes.

    Tear-jerking? Absolutely.

"Soul-Crushingly Depressing?" ...I'm not so sure.

Out of context, the sight of an aged and dying Reimu is hard to take, sure... but there are by *far* many worse ways to die than this -- peacefully, at the end of a long and happy life, and in the company of a beloved friend. Even Yukari and Suika seem philosophical rather than depressed about it, and are simply grateful for having known such a wonderful person as Reimu. Personally I find it heartwarming, or at least as heartwarming as death can possibly be.

Even though it's a peaceful death, I would personally prefer if Reimu had rather chosen to became immortal by following the footsteps of some other former human characters. Heck there is even the option of becoming a vampire which shouldn't take too much effort to gain compared to stuff like becoming a hermit.

I know what you mean. The angst angle is fun to play out, but if we go by the atmosphere of canon, something like the future misadventures of Reimu involving her becoming a hermit and Marisa training under Byakuren would be more plausible than the typical fanon clichés; Sakuya's 'sorry, I'll only serve you for my natural life' was her being goofy as she is ageless by means of the Luna Dial, and both Youmu and Reisen have obvious ways of avoiding death. The story of Gensokyo seems less cyclical or pessimistic and more about an incipient golden age.

Reimu … are you there? I'm coming in.
    Oh my ... how unusual.
… It was always a lot of work cleaning up after their disasters, but, … when I think about it now, I'm glad to have made more friends.
I was embarrased and couldn't say it until now, but …
    ...hehe, just kidding.
... I'm thankful that you let me have it. ... I see that even an oni can show compassion.
Of course, even I have enough compassion to warrant the phrase, "A tear even in the eye of an oni."
    Besides...
    Oh, is that right?
… Heh, you're still just as you were.
    I'll be going then, grandma.
    She turns fourteen-fifteen this year?
I'm glad you came to see me after all this time, Yukari.
… It looks like you haven't changed a bit, Reimu.
    Ah, thank you.
    Yes, take care!
That girl sure has grown up.
She turned fifteen just last month.
That's right. How long has it been since that time?
I've become an old woman like this, but …
… Speaking of, I was about that age when I met you, wasn't I.
Please finish your farewells by then.
    Here's some tea.
    … True.
Ah, right … I had my 60th birthday recently, you know?
A lot of kids came to celebrate.
Why, I'm probably just about the only human with so many various acquaintances.
Hey, Yukari. Why are you making such a sad face?
    … 60 years, huh.
… I've met a lot of people and youkai,
and have lived a good life up to now.
Compared to my predecessors, it's been luxury, and I've lived more than happily enough …
    It's a bit surprising, but it's sweet.
When you become an old woman, you start talking this way to everyone.
    … Hey, Yukari.
    Heh … Thanks, Yukari.
    Today's … nice weather, isn't it?
Then, how about having a flower viewing together with everyone?
    … Mmm.
And we'll invite everyone we haven't seen in a while.
That would certainly … be a lot of fun.
She passed away with a good expression.
Unless I'm mistaken, which I'm not, you're the one who created Gensokyo, at least as it exists today. So, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to call you this world's mother, would it?
... Well, I let you have her deathbed, so don't say that.
... You're right. Sorry, I just wanted to ask.
    …? It's nothing …
    Oh, is that right?
Hey, Suika, can I ask you something?
    Hm?
    … My.
… I wonder if it's going to snow tomorrow. This is not a weather forecast but instead a cliche statement that points out Yukari's behavior as unusual.
    She'll soon be a full-fledged shrine maiden.
    … Heh.
… I don't think my face is any different than usual?
I'm sorry. I just got that impression …
Heh … I never would have thought it as a child, but …
    … Yes.
    … Hey, Yukari.
    And the wind is gentle.
Spring will certainly come soon, and this place will become filled with cherry blossoms.
    … Suika …?
Well, when it's been nearly an hour, I'll call the children.
    ? Later, then.
… I'm really grateful, you know?
So now, to get to see grandchildren and children living happily …
    … And,
I got to drink tea with an important friend of mine at the end.
    … It's like you're treating me as a child.
    Oh, I'm sorry.
About that girl … Can I ask you a favour?
That girl is just like I used to be,
… I'll do that, when I feel like it.
I'm not so much of an ogre that I'd unconcernedly intrude on a mother grieving the death of her child.
    … Yes.
    Yes, it is.
    … Hey, Reimu.
I'm really glad for you being the shrine maiden of Hakurei.
    … So thank you, Reimu.
    It's not nice to peep.
Then, aren't you guys like a kind of mother and child?
Youkai, naturally, vampires, ghosts, oni and celestials, we could even put a call out to Makai and Moriya...
    ...Besides?
...There's no problem with me being here too.
    … It's nice weather today, isn't it?
I was sure you wouldn't be awakening until spring.
jumping into things without thinking, so if it's all right with you … Please help her.
Let's make merry together with everyone.
And Reimu there, she was called "The Shrine Maiden of Paradise". I feel it important to highlight a point, here: rather than the more common kanji for miko, 巫女, Suika uses 御子. The characters read as "miko", and can refer to a shrine maiden, but taken individually mean "honored child", and are (or, at least, were) also used as a word to describe a child of the emperor.
… Heh. So even Yukari makes such a face.
    …Sleep well…
...I call them "kids", but they were all youkai as usual. None of them are so busy they can't come visit every once in a while. I'm hardly ever bored.
