Why? It's just the first syllable of Lion repeated.

Because that's how it's translated in the Hololive community. The line Botan is saying there is specifically pronounced "La Lion", as shown in OOZ662's link. Botan is singing that song in the second panel.

Yeah, I guess that they pronounce "lion" as "rai-on" makes it a little wobbly in choosing how to transcribe it. I never listened that closely.

I dunno, Nene's L's are pretty strong, I hear "La-Lie-own" fairly clearly. Everyone knows it as La Lion, personally I think this might be an instance where accuracy takes a backseat to common parlance. Just include a TN explaining the discrepancy.

It's pronounced ラ・ライオン /raraion/ (or [ɾaɾaion] if you must); for whatever reason, the person who subtitled it there decided to make it la-lion. There's a difference in pronunciation in English between Li-Lion /lʌ lʌɪən/ (first syllable of Lion twice) and La-Lion /lɑ lʌɪən/ (la as in do-re-mi), and considering that it's pretty clear it's just the first part of Lion twice, making it La-Lion is less correct from a pure meaning perspective.

While someone might see that as /liː lʌɪən/ (lee as in leeway), I don't think most people would.

Now, in Japanese, there's no difference between the musical note of La and the first syllable of Lion, but that's a separate thing entirely.

If you wanted to be even more nitpicky, L-Lion works as well.

For ultra-pendantry, nobody in Japan pronounces 'lion' as 'raion', they pronounce 'raion' as 'raion'. In Japanese Lion is both /shishi/ and /raion/, where /raion/ is not the English word Lion being said in katakana (I mean, it is because it's a loanword); this is the same as how English pronounces foreign words differently sometimes - it's not mispronouncing it, it's just been brought over and incorporated using the available phonetic inventory. Almost every time a lion is talked about in Japanese, raion is used over shishi, indicating that raion has become a proper 'Japanese word', unlike 'doggu' or 'kyatto', where inu and neko are used preferably.

Honestly I'm not sure what the purpose of half of this reply was. I never said your translation was wrong. It's accurate for sure.

"Li-Lion" is correct from a pure meaning perspective, but from a context perspective, I say it's wrong, and believe that this might be a case where being contextually accurate is preferable, especially when singing the song yourself it has to be "La-lion" because, as you said, and as I already knew, La-lion and li-lion are pronounced differently.

"The line Botan is saying there is specifically pronounced "La Lion" is saying I was wrong, no?

It doesn't have to be la-lion when you sing it, because you're saying li(on)-lion, not a separate 'li' + 'lion'. I guess I'm just approaching this thing entirely differently from you, since I read li-lion here as /lʌ lʌɪən/ every time (never /liː lʌɪən/), and la-lion as /lɑ lʌɪən/, meaning that la-lion is not li(on)-lion to me, in sound or meaning.

If you feel that strongly about it, then I don't mind changing it though.
