It's not the equipment that matters and it's not the pilot either. Unit 01 has the tendency to go berserk (as seen in episode 2) and rip apart it's attacker and possibly eat them as well. The Zero doesn't have an AT field, or the ability to regenerate. Plus if Rei/Lilith starts neutralizing every ones AT field and turns them into puddles of orange goo, you wont be safe in a Gundam unit.

In the next scene, 01 casts off his armor, goes berserk, tears open Wing Zero's cockpit and EATS HEERO LIKE A McNUGGET! Oh the humanity! :O Or Wufei, or Quatre...or whoever's piloting Wing Zero at the moment. It doesn't matter, they're all McNuggets to 01.
There's no record of the A.T. Wings Being of Utility, and even with that You are forgeting the Zero System, no matter How much Berserk it is, her movements would be easy readen.

That's not quite posibly... First.- The EVA 01 is not a Gurren Lagann to have that kind of power at disposal (at least, not while Shinji is still "OK"). 2nd.- tear apart is a skill created by Asuka, even though Shinji not even Saw it, (and he's not very ocurrent, is he?). 3rd.- There is nothing eternal the regeneration system have limits. 4th.- The power as long as the Universe exists? ok, i think it's not neccesary to comment over that...
Still The battle would be something really epic, not so much like Gaogaigar Vs MazinKaiser, or Gurren Lagann.
@duolancello The core Eva ate kinda gave it those abilities, remember? Heck, Adam and Lilith survived the second impact.
and yeah, if Shinji is piloting it would limit it to his experience. As soon as Shinji goes beyond the safety threshold or he's not OK, then that's different. Or who taught the Eva to erode AT fields, regrow limbs in a second, or have a taste for angel flesh?
couldn't you just cut off the power supply to the EVA? if I recall, EVA-01 need a consistent power supply. (That's what that black cable is for, right? Of course, this would be a one on one battle, right? no support from hq?

It ate the core of an Angel, which rendered its need for the cable to power it useless.
Eva 1 ate an organ from an Angel not its core. The core was the big red orb which the Evas alreday have. They never technically stated the organs purpose or effect and it still needed the cable to function for extended periods.
And i think itd be an interesting match. Cause i suppose it'd depend on approch. Cause Zero obviously has the advantage at a distance and Heeros piloting skillz are definantly better than shinji. (if the suits were operated in the same manner), But 01 has the advantage in close range and the AT feild, and its berserker mode, but zero has the Zero System allowing it to calculate battle outcomes so I'm calling utter distruction to both parties lol

Wing-G have more weapons and the poliet is more skilled then Eva-01 but Eva 1 has the AT field advantage. But I think there is a 50/50 chance for both since they both have advantages and BIG disadvantage.
Guys: You forgot the various "handheld" EVA weapons. They have huge assault rifles, particle guns, missile launchers etc. The particle cannon for example can almost reach a target from the ground to the space(high orbit to be more precise). Eves HAD ranged weapons it's another thing they're somewhat useless against the AT fields and the Angel fights tend to be occouring at close range. So Hero has only two advantages the suit's flying ability and his skill. It's proved many times the EVAS are able to survive nuclear(or near-nuclear) explosions at point-blank range. Wing Zero's twin buster rifle has limited amunition(It stores the power in canisters. It can shot only a dozen of shots at maximum). And we can't forget Hero has probably zero knownledge about the EVA's AT field.
Eva01 has his mentioned assault rifle. Hero tried shooting him, and after getting what must've been a direct hit shielded decided to take it to melee. He neutralized the Eva's gun and is about to cut its head off. Hero is so cool and talented that he walked through the AT field. He is used to his opponents being terrfied of him, and it has never saved them before. Why would it now?
The outcome of the swing is decided by if the name of the series is first-billed with 'Evangelion' or 'Gundam'. Shinji is in a position to punch Hero in the face, or get his head/shoulder cut off, or be tripped.
Gundam was scaled up to be same size and looks bigger because he's landing on the Eva from an aerial attack.
After eating the angel's organ, eva 01 got unlimited operational time, which means it can also keep its AT Field on for as long as Shinji wants to be separated from everyone else. Since nothing can get through a decent AT Field other than another AT field, then I guess the fight has 90% chances to be a victory for the Eva, unless Heero uses some kind of reverse-psychological warfare to make shinji ultra happy. Piloting skill doesn't really matter since Evas are sentient beings.

Uhm, EVA's actually are like, twice the size of the average Gundam, plus they stop point-blank nuclear explosions and go toe-to-toe with immortal godlike monstrosities (and let's stop here since talking about ATFields, encased souls and Berserk would bring on metaphysics), do tell me where a Gundam can withstand at least half of what an EVA can.
Hmm...yup, Heero will become a bloody snack at the range he's fighting EVA01. If he were at a distance, he has a good chance of winning. But, he decided to do the 'smart thing' and fight an EVA at CQC. His beam saber means nothing once Shinji panics.

He could fire all he want till he ran out of ammo and he would still not put a dent on 01.
It could be a battle of attrition, but even then 01 have the advantage of power supply.
No really, there's little possibility Wing could win but that's by screwing shinji which then the 01 will automatically goes berserk anyway before any chance arrive.
