Well in her lines there are references so they do know and I guess she has some trauma from the incident, but hey she still went on the mission

Johnston feels like one of KC's less understood characters. A lot of fans either assume she's a tsundere because she looks kind of like Amatsukaze, when she's got at most one line that could even kind of be seen that way, or anglophone fans just know the historical Johnston attacked larger ships and assume she's violent for the sake of violence. A few of her hourly lines- like questioning Yukikaze's aversion to legwear- have also led to her being the straight man compared to the rest of the botegirls.

In this particular strip, though, the joke wouldn't have worked if Johnston fired at the enemy planes with her more reasonably-sized AA guns. That probably wouldn't have damaged their own plane the way Nelson's main canons did.

Should have taken B-17’s instead of a Lancaster. 13 .50’s as opposed to a dinky 8 .303’s. And it could probably have taken the force of Nelson’s shots.

Also, this would probably be Johnston’s solution.

Or she’d try and be given the “that was a tv show, it wasn’t real” talk.

Actually a "brainwashed" Johnston punched CL Hime, rodeo'd a battleship monster and saved both Gamby and Sam from an EMP blast during the Gambier Bay Manga. Maybe have her drunk, then the spirit of Captain Evans would take over removing all of her common sense.

I'm assuming "the Gambier Bay Manga" here refers to Ido's Also Sprach Gambier Bay and not Tonight, Another Salute.

In which case damn, I need to try ordering that book again.
