These six girls sacrificed their careers-- if not their freedoms and lives-- for Coco, and Coco repaid them by leaving six months later, saying she had never wanted to be part of Hololive in the first place.
And that's why I can't stand Coco anymore.

Rrrriiiiight...If anything, she don't care if she's the one being hurt, she CARE if others being hurt because of her. And what some members of Holo China did (you know what) doesn't help their case, either. It's all started because the lack of common sense for some people, period.

And frankly after watching Depressed Nousagi's coverage of the Taiwan incident, and his members'-only "Where are the Hololive China girls now?" video, only the two Taiwan-based members of this branch (Yogiri and Spade) have their hands clean. Even Civia was implicated in this because she was in contact with one of the big-name antis on NGA by the name of Yui.

So, what exactly went down with Holo China?

So, sometime in late 2020, Coco and Haato (not at the same time, but on two separate streams) were reading various statistics about their Youtube channels on stream. What specifically caused a kerfuffle was the viewers by country stat, which listed Taiwan (separate from China) as a major source of viewership for both channels. Both streamers made mention of this, which made mainland Chinese watchers angry because it involved describing Taiwan as something separate from China. Chinese viewers made a stink about it and both of them got temporary suspensions.

After that, Chinese watchers argued that the punishment was too harsh for Haato, but not for Coco - they wanted Coco to be outright fired. They did a huge harassment campaign against pretty much everyone in Hololive and basically declared an "us or her" ultimatum, and Cover chose her, dumping their Chinese branch and pulling out of the Chinese market entirely.

Coco, for her part, was already feeling disappointed that Cover wouldn't let her collab with Projekt Melody (since she's known as an outright porn actress and they decided that was a bridge too far), and when the harassment started she was restricted in her ability to even collab with other members of Hololive, because any Hololive talent seen alongside her would get an extra helping of harassment from Chinese viewers for it. So she decided her career wasn't going to go where she wanted to take it like this, and left Hololive (to eventually join VShoujo, so now she can have all the collabs with Melody she could ever want).

(This is just speculation on my part, but the difference in reaction towards Haato and Coco for doing basically the same thing makes me think that this was never really about Taiwan. Before 2020, China was basically Hololive's only foreign market, with many of them being superstars on Bilibili - I think at one point Fubuki was the #1 most subscribed to VTuber on Bilibili - while viewership from other countries, particularly western countries, was barely a blip on the radar. But then Coco joined Hololive, and from day one was heavily committed to both pushing the boundaries of what Hololive was willing to do and reaching out to western audiences. And her methods got results - 2020 was the year Hololive's western audience blew up, and I don't think that was solely because of Covid quarantines. Without Coco, we probably wouldn't have gotten Hololive EN, as least not as early as we did or with as much success, and I think the Chinese audience saw this and resented Coco for "westernizing" Hololive and taking away their dominance in Hololive's viewership, so they wanted her gone, and the Taiwan thing was just a pretense to act on the grudge they already held. I think they were really hoping they could get Coco booted and go back to Hololive being a "no westerners allowed" club, which makes what actually went down even funnier.)

I'll trim the quote down when I am on desktop, but Coco was absolutely instrumental in Cover creating an English branch. She even starred in a video advertising the opening of auditions for the English branch.
