Anatomy: even most artist don't know what exactly lies in one's body outside of posing. Truth in fiction: most birds will have something called "blood feathers" in their cycle of molting. It's essentially a keratinized spike containing pre-grown feathers, which unlike full-grown ones, has blood vessels running in it. When impacted, this blood feather could break and bled profusely.
