    Grampa, Dad, and Goldshi.

...And aren't you being a bit of a hypocrite here, McQueen?

    --

Anyhow, to add another dimension to this, the real-life Stay Gold's sire was Sunday Silence. Sunday Silence got along very well with Mejiro McQueen (the horse), to the point that staff would even call them (gay) lovers. So, yes, additional awkwardness (i.e. your best friend's son screwing all your daughters).

Also Sunday Silence had another notable son... Special Week. dun-dun-DUN!

Silence Suzuka was another of Sunday Silence's sons. :D

Oh right. (Agnes Tachyon too, for the matter.) Gives a new meaning when one sees yuri pairoffs between Silence Suzuka and Special Week. And then some even throw in Grass Wonder (RL Special Week's Great-uncle) on top...

Waaaaait a minute, Grass Wonder. Sibling to Northern Taste, right? Rabbit hole just keeps getting deeper. Dark Side of the Horse indeed.

(IIRC one can trace most of the Japanese racehorses' lineages to either Sunday Silence or Northern Dancer [Sire to both Grass Wonder and Northern Taste]. Or both.)

Anyhow, some pertinent info on RL McQueen/Stay Gold, pulled from Horse JP Keiba

    (...)

    Episode
    • He was next room to Sunday Silence when he was a stallion.
    • Sunday Silence had a very rough temper, and was very threatening to other horses including Mejiro McQueen.
    • But Mejiro McQueen kept ignoring Sunday Silence.
    • Then, for some reason, Sunday Silence took a liking to Mejiro McQueen and became friends with him.
    • When the staff saw Sunday Silence and Mejiro McQueen staring at each other and not moving, they thought their relationship was like being lovers.
    • Apparently Sunday Silence has become a little more quiet and less threatening when Mejiro McQueen was nearby him.
    Stud Career
    • He was expected to connect sire lines.
    • But his crops could not win a G1 race.
    • However he succeeded as a dam-sire.
    • Mating Stay Gold with his daughter-horses gave birth to successful horses.
    • He is a dam-sire of Dream Journey, Orfevre and Gold Ship.
    • The sire of all of them is Stay Gold.

Can we just say, that if looked into, nearly 99% of the Umamusume ships are actually incestious?

    That’s the thoroughbred for you.

    The royal families of horses.

    Show

IIRC the secret to breeding a successful thoroughbred racehorse (real world, not Umamusume) is to use just the riiiight amount of incest, and not too much.

Successful on the racetrack, I mean. Some things may be... sacrificed in the process. Though they try to fix things by outbreeding every now and then.

Oh, found this relationship chart on the Japanese interwebs.

Teal arrows indicate children, green for grandchildren, and orange for great-grandchildren. Center is "Sunday Silence".

You do not want to know what pink means.

It's...actually very common in other kind of selective breeding. Like in pugs. Or in rabbits.
The idea is 'the purer the genes, the stronger the effect, but a little mutation goes a long way'. That way breeders can keep the dominant traits they wanted but also introduce mutations that may or may not helpful, and then either continue the line with desirable mutations while discontinuing the line with less desirable mutations.

    RAAAAAAAEG
    run away!!
That fiend has repeatedly laid hands on my daughters in the other world!!
I will definitely bludgeon her to death once she is implemented inside the game!
Kin'iro Ryotei, anime-only background character. Has no voice lines and isn't technically based directly on a real-life racehorse. But her name and list of achievements are unambiguously references to Stay Gold, the sire of Gold Ship. So, basically, this is an "Angry Father-in-Law" joke. That is, McQueen is pissed because her 'son-in-law' is unfaithful and fucked every single one of her daughters. Their real world counterparts, at least.
    Calm down, McQueen!
Hey, Cygames! Please don't implement me in-game, okay!? I mean it!!
