"And then Samus was a Metroid."

And you thought nothing could be worse than Other M.

Nothing is worse than other M. The damage it did to the series really can't be understated.

It didn't turn Samus into a horrible mutant.

Long live freedom, where I am free to like both Dread and Other M, and you are also free to judge me for it.

Now, this was ALMOST a Metroid game without metroids.

Horrible mutant is far preferable to baby obsessed, useless little girl who can't so much as breathe without Daddy Adam's permission, even if it puts her own life at risk for no good reason.

I've read the English localization did that to her. In the original, Samus was being stubborn and performing speed runner/sequence breaking stunts to mess with Adam. Kind of a hat tip to the crazy things players do with the gameplay.

Not that the writing for Other M is any good. Dread's is also quite bad.

It wasn't that much different in the Japanese version and Sakamoto himself oversaw the translation and voice direction so it was very much in line with what he wanted

I for one am glad there is a consistent chronology in the franchise.
Other franchises across the board, from inside or outside Nintendo, tend to never care about previous works in a way that, well, bores and frustrates me.

There isn't much to keep track of. Metroid's got minimal story. Keeping continuity should be a breeze.

Samus being a "horrible mutant" has been canon for literal decades. Her infusion with Chozo DNA was part of the graphic novel, which itself was based on the Super Metroid comic published in Nintendo Power. You're a quarter-century too late to be whining about Samus not being purely human.

Yeah, I had problems with that back then to. And it kept getting worse and worse.

So okay, she's got the blood of enlightened space birds in her veins. That's a bit weird, but a suitable proxy for being a demi-god in a sci-fi setting. In essence, she received a divine blessing. Kind of like Hera bathing Achilles in sacred oils and fire. But instead of simply letting that be the case, letting her be merely *that special*, for whatever godawful reason, it wasn't enough.

Same thing happened with Zelda, now that I think about it. Zelda was the Keeper of the Triforce of Wisdom, the seventh sage, leader of them all, and the princess of Hyrule. That *should* be more than enough...until they literally made her into a freaking goddess in Skyward Sword.

It's funny to think that Peach is the most grounded Nintendo girl. When they needed to up the ante a bit, they weren't shy about introducing another magical girl in the story, like Rosalina, who's like super galactic Peach.

A little unrelated but i gotta ask, what do you(and anyone else who wants to answer) think makes good story and characters in a video game?

    Consistency is a good start.

I don't really see what the issue of her being a mutant is when she LOOKS completely normal outside of her suit.

Consistency is preposterous once you want to milk a sequel, because you can't tell when it will be the next or last game. They are condemned to remake the story for as long as the plot is convenient for a new game. Learn to live with every game being a different story, even if it has a number next to the title.

Why is everyone just fuming over Other M and Dread? Let's face it, Other M is bad, Dread is good.

Also, CAN WE JUST APPRECIATE THAT SAMUS IS LITERALLY THE DOOM SLAYER OF THE METROID WORLD NOW!? JUST LOOK AT HER!!! SHE'S SO DAMN BADASS AND I FUCKING LOVE IT!!!

Honestly I find this to be a sad end to the Metroids, because I liked the challenge they provided and the threat they posed despite looking simplistic as an alien lifeform (design-wise). But the story so far definitely opens room for more difficulties for Samus to overcome and more flexibility for her developers (who knew Metroid DNA would now make you weak to extreme cold too? Metroid rarely had reason for icy levels).

That said, Prime 2: Echoes was a game without Metroids. And it was fantastic af. As long as they keep the essence, future Metroid games will be great, even without the titular creatures
