People can love selfish and egotistical characters because their other characteristics make them endearing to the audience. Often they're badass and don't fall for the obvious traps and setups of the more goody-goody heroes often do. There's probably hundreds of reasons and examples.

The majority of Touhou characters are selfish, egostical bastards anyway. I mean you got a kleptomaniac witch, a fairy that freezes frogs for fun, a hungry ghost that steals the spring, a nurse lady that sabotages space missions and steals the moon for her shut-in friend, a grim reaper that sleeps on her job, a god that moves in and decides to force everyone to convert to her religion, a raven from hell that decides to take over the world because she misunderstood what said god told her to do, not to mention other characters like the one tengu that has a newspaper that's basically the Gensokyo equivalent of the National Inquirer, a drunkard oni, and a nocturnal lady that could destroy Gensokyo altogether but doesn't probably because of the lulz. What makes it worse is that they all basically solve all of their problems through violence--even the less bastardly ones like Nitori and Koishi.

Also why people think reimu is a genius... She is has a natural talent for fights but it was never stated that she is actually intelligent. In fact it was said that marisa is the hardworking that is somewhat inteligent.

As a note, when everyone in the board jumps on you, it doesn't necessarily make you a sooth-sayer, fighting a corrupt system. You could just be an idiot, trying to explain why his opinion is somehow more logical, as if a variety of tastes were somehow an impossibility.
Reimu isn't my favorite either. It's Cirno, Suwako and Remilia. And Cirno looks so darn adorable in these strips. I just wanna hug her, even if I get a few frost burns... ouch, but yay.

That's some bullshit Kabi wrote. I just LOVE playing ant-heroes in games, it's very interesting to do things in villainous way. You can get booooooored with good guys as main characters. Reimu feels like real character, your everyday normal person. She has her bad and positive sides. And resolving things because someone is annoyed is just badass. Well, she IS worried about incidents and complications, she just don't show it. She grinds her teeths and do the job. That's more admirable than showing off good guys. She isn't any way as villainous as Wario (fat, greedy jerkass, throwing his opponents - often smaller - into walls or just grinding them into ground, basically helps people ONLY because it was coincidence) or Rance (serious rapist, which don't give a fuck about most people - he just pass them or kill them, if they stay in his way. Also, idiot). You know, when in FF III you hear legends about Dark Heroes, which fought off Good force, because it was endangering world - I instantly though it would be awesome game to play as THEM, not some childrens which happened to be good guys.

Reimu really isn't evil as everybody says, as her actions might be questionable, she really isn't really the worst person around there. She may beat up people, but that only because she's the one of the few who successfully has won most of them, more than half of them were her opponents threatening her! (It's like how fanon treats Kirby, making him more of a violent glutton, instead of just a regular glutton).
If you think about it, she's actually nicer than you think:
As the pillar of Gensoukyo's barrier, and having an Unstoppable attack, she can beat up anybody while literally be untouchable, yet she made the spellcard rules so they have a chance to can Beat. Her. Up!
She might act mean to the various Youkai that visit her shrine, but she could have might as well immediately kicked them out, not to mention that most of them are a bunch of moochers that practically lived there. She's a tsundere, no doubt abut it!
She's sort of a Animal lover, so she can't be that bad.
In fact, almost everyone in gensoukyo can be considered both 'evil' and 'good'.
