UNSC ships are basically just giant flying cannons, so there is a precedent for that in starship design
If anything that would be a great starship design. If you're fighting other starships you don't want to trade fire with them. You want to take them down in a single hit if you can, so by creating a huge flying gun you're basically creating a flying sniper rifle.
