Could be either, the kanji used translates to "adjacent country", which just adds to how terrifying this would be in real life if your own government can't even confirm where it came from.

North Korea just had another launch of something, which South Korea is calling a ballistic missile, and it headed into the Japanese sea.
I say this calls for current event.

Update: North Korea admitted that it was a missile. Though they do claim it was just an "equipment check".

Considering this is from the same series where the shipgirls are recruited into the fleet, this could be an attack by the Abyssals that prompted the character to join the military, something like Starship Troopers' Argentina meteor

Reminds me of how they tell people not to say "help, rape", but "help, fire" instead, because people will run to stop a fire, but not a rape. If you say "it's aliens, you got to believe me" nobody will believe you, but if you say "North Korea is launching missiles, get to shelter", people get into the damn shelter.

It may be that the people issuing the alert really do think it's the "nearby country". If a missile were launched at Japan, people would be more likely to assume it's the DPRK rather than angry ghosts left over from WWII or whatever the Abyssals are.

I know not or remember when this was come from, but yes this was very popular in Japan. At first i thought "no way in hell they did that" then i saw the it on several occasion and say to me self... "Japan need both help and fixing their people mentality".

What is the commentary referring to with "Yuubari's 'Miraculous self-sustaining combustion engine'"?

Edit: OK, but what does that have to do with the "meteor"/missile?
