Funnily enough, a big part of the push for online gambling mechanics like loot boxes comes from the gambling industry, which has realized that Millennials don't like classic gambling games like blackjack, so they moved into getting in on loot boxes and games to keep their industry alive when the Boomers die off.

And yet anti-gambling laws also exist to protect minors from this dangerous habit, which is why a company like EA was taken to court for it's predatory lootbox mechanics in games like Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Yeah, but Star Wars is peanuts to them. They make hundreds of billions of dollars selling lootboxes to get footballers for your team in their FIFA series, which is rated PEGI 3, and the PEGI rating board upheld that decision. Clearly, it's perfectly fine for toddlers to be given the credit card to gamble, and the backlash over Star Wars never made them go back on anything but Star Wars.

I forget what it's called, but I am aware that there *is* a texas hold-'em poker gacha game in Japan.
I was tripping balls when I found that out.
