I'm a gun noob, is it because it's possible to hit yourself or other unwanted targets, or because it will break the lever?
Both can happen. Or you break your fingers like what nearly happened to Arnold Schwarzenegger when he accidentally did it with an actual (unloaded) shotgun instead of the lighter aluminum prop they were using for filming.
