    北米でよく知られたな魚種に因む艦名だそうですが、巨大な艦首はマッコウクジラを思わせます。艦首格納筒に核巡航ミサイルを搭載、浮上後甲板上の架台に引き出し、翼を展張・調整、発射まで8分を要するという脆弱なシステムでした。水中発射可能な艦隊弾道ミサイル・ポラリスの開発成功で、その主兵装は一挙に陳腐化、姉妹艦共々早期に第一線を退くものの、転用後の運用実績も含め、後のSSGN改オハイオ級に繋がるのは興味深いですね。

    Before the advent of SSGNs and SSBNs, you had *this*. USS Grayback (foreground, SSG-574) and Growler (background, SSG-577) were purpose-built to launch the nuclear-capable Regulus cruise missile, a positively ginormous thing compared to today's cruise missiles.

    Actually, this picture goes a bit further than that. The five active Regulus boats usually had SSM-N-8 Regulus I missiles, which were basically further-developed, nuclear V-1s. What *these* two are equipped with here are the SSM-N-9 Regulus II, an absurdly large (longer than the contemporary F-8 Crusader carrier fighter, for perspective) and expensive thing that ended up getting canned after about two years in favor of more Regulus Is and, later, the Polaris.
