    Moe-power. The only plausible explanation.

Wishful thinking and the fact that her plane probably doesn't have anyway back down to earth without crashing.

LOL... The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 FOXBAT was designed specifically to intercept the SR-71. It can fly at Mach 3 at high altitudes.

Would that be before or after the MiG's engine exploded from overheating?

SR-71 drivers never considered MiG-25 to be a big threat.

Actually, the Foxbat was meant to down the XB-70 Valkyrie bomber first, but with no Valkyrie, the Foxbat was sort of looking for a job.

So I guess chasing Blackbirds was the next best thing, or considering the phenomenal performance of the Blackbirds, the Foxbat moved on to bigger and better things.

    ...that it couldn't catch.

Viktor Belenko has stated that the MiG-25 Foxbat could reach the operational altitude and speed of an SR-71, but only for a matter of minutes, if even that. The MiG-25 suffered greatly at the SR-71's operational speed and altitude because it's engines were just turbojets, which suffered greatly at higher speeds. The SR-71 used J-58 Turbo-Ramjets which at higher speeds, operated on the air passing through the inlet and the afterburner. This allowed the SR-71 to fly at its operational limits for hours. If any Mig-25 that attempted that, the engine would burn up, or if the pilot made the wrong move, could "unstart" the engine and screw himself big time.

    From the page I linked:

Editors Note: I will leave the reader to draw their own conclusion as to whether or not a Mig-25 or a Mig-31 could have intercepted an SR-71. In my biased opinion it would be: "Highly Unlikely". The following facts are true:

    1. A Mig-25 or Mig-31 has never fired a missile at an SR-71.

    2. SR-71 Pilots state that the Mig-25/31 never posed a serious threat to their aircraft.

    3. The Mig-25 can only sustain Mach 2.8 for a short duration due to engine overheat.

    4. The Mig-25 can only sustain an altitude of 78,740 feet for two minutes maximum.

    5. In 1973, Kelly Johnson, designer of the SR-71 Blackbird, stated that the Mig-25 Foxbat has the inherent capability to outperform the SR only in maneuverability. However, he stated, it would be the missile and not the aircraft that would require the maneuverability to intercept a Blackbird.

    6. The SR-71 routinely cruised at Mach 3.2 in continuous afterburner at 80-85,000 feet. The speed and altitude of an SR-71 coupled with superior Defensive electronics has prevented any intended intercept of the Blackbird either by land based missiles or airborne Interceptor threats.

    7. Almost all SR-71 Blackbird Reconnaissance Aircraft are now in Museums throughout the United States, having flown for 32 years with the distinction of being the "The highest flying and fastest air breathing aircraft in the world".

But it was, still, a possibility.

Sadly, there aren't any SR-71 flying anymore. The Mig-25 and the 31 on the other part are still used in many countries.

They are the fastest and highest flying fighter aircraft ever built...

    EXCEL's tweet:

post #534606 (I know I should not post this URL on here, but) this is my old poster of the TFS convention. There was an endless discussion about the possibilities of shooting down a SR-71 using MiG-25 jets among the foreign users. That taught me that all military geeks all over the world do behave in the same way.
