The recent anime always has that constant melancholic feeling from it and there is always that reminder that you lose some friends along the way. I'd say Tanaka really wanted for kancolle to be as anti-war as possible, yet they'd still pulled some punches showing the girls retiring from the fight instead of just straight up killing them, except for the final episode which everyone just end up getting massacred.
There is also the part that shows how much the girls enjoy their lives in the time of peace, and the last part which pretty much an epitaph of the ships.

Good, let it be like that. They can sink again and again and again infinitely. Let the enemies in kancolle be not seen as vague aliens and just be straight up be the allied forces. If kancolle is trully anti-war, then what was the point of the game and the first season of the anime? It does not look very anti war to me.

The game has mechanics that if you keep sending the girls to sortie, their morale will keep degrading to the point they'll become really ineffective to battle, war logistics is not the most fun thing, not to mention having perma-death.
And about the season 1, Tanaka pretty much wants to fix that mistake.

The Abyssals pretty much represent humanity's negative emotions, hatred, malice, madness, corruption. Even how much you suppress the abyssals, the abyssals will always be there pretty much how negative emotions will always be part of humanity. And the kanmusu represents optimism through despair that's why you find them after a fight, you gain happiness as you try to face all of these negative emotions but staring at the abyss and the abyss will stare at you back, if you try to charge into battle blindly you'll lose that happiness you have gained until the abyss swallow you.
Funny people already forgot that before they added the Allied ships, everyone assumed that the abyssals represent them cuz many of the IJN operations are very obviously related to RL. Some aren't happy that it is likely they change that at some point of avoid "problems".

There is that rumor if kancolle did not blow up, it'll probably end itself with a bang by having the abyssal win in the final event.
More like with their alternate history yanking, they'll make things different
As far as I know, kancolle is set during the present time hence the knowledge of kanmusus about the war and with some of them aware of the current technology. I would see this as just scenarios based on history rather trying to alter the history.
