I find it amusing, in these 3D images, that the skin is always a single blank colour, the hair is seldom natural looking, yet the metal looks as nice and polished as though it were real.

It's because skin and hair aren't naturally uniform, and thus are harder to texture. On the other hand, metal looks good with a simple texture.
