Honestly, I've heard baseball and horse races have been the national sports in Japan from a really long time ago. Why it took so long to anthropomorf horses and turn them idols is beyond my comprehension.

I think I have seen a DMM game with horse girls as the theme, back in like 2014-5. Never heard or seen it again, so safe to say it didn't work out.

That was, in fact, Umamusume (reasonably sure). It was delayed again and again... until we got what we have now. It's possible that you saw some production stuff about it rather than a finished game. It's not like Priconne where they put out something that failed and then rejigged it into something that worked.

The first Umamusume manga came out in 2016 even, a full 5 years before the game. And an anime 3 years before the game too!

We'd be off by a year or so since Umamusume was first announced with its infamous promo back in March of 2016, around the time the first manga by Zeco came out, with the release supposed to be some time after the 1st season of the anime... Before everyone realized people were much more receptive to the actual racing elements than the idol aspects, leading to Cygames smashing the reset button for the franchise. That said though, laisy could be misremembering, as memories can be finnicky...

Probably as war horses. In fact the whole race horsing apparatus in Japan has its roots in the need for war horses pre-WWII, albeit those were more Army than Navy.
