Clothing articles of Friend-ed animals are pseudo-material projected by the Sandstar energy from their main body, same as their weapons. They can learn to 'detach' them by having an image of shedding them off, as Kaban shown them. That's the reason why the clothing articles can regenerate and Black Bear said she can feel that her 'claw' aka the bearpaw staff hurting when it's damaged during the Cerulean hunt.

There's nothing sudden about it, official materials established a few years ago that the only thing actually distinguishing a Friend from ordinary humans is their own belief that they're different from humans. Both their clothes and their animal parts are fake and not actually connected anatomically to their bodies, while still being fully functional. If a Friend believes strongly enough that they're the same as a human, they can remove not only their clothes, but even their animal parts.
Friends are basically just humans with extra parts.
