Basically, we’re reaching the end of Ash’s journey. This was the last episode of the anime’s regular arc. Starting in January, they”ll air an 11-episode mini series that will feature Ash visiting old friends and Pokemon. Once that concludes, they’ll start a new Pokemon anime with new main characters.
I’m a little hazy on the specifics of the special series, but one message is clear: After nearly 26 years, they’re officially winding down Ash’s journey.
Edit: We'll also have a special episode next week. I'm not sure what it's going to cover.
Kind of feels like they're making the digimon mistake of getting rid of their cash cow main characters.
Like, that was the main reason for drastic difference in longevity between the two anime series.
NOPE! Digimon didn't make any mistake in that. In fact is quiet the opposite, they make the mistake at chasing trendings and threat Digimon as a cashcow in 1st place, plus Adventure, or not let creatives to be themselves instead of forcing marketing (aka: Digmon Savers and Adventure 2020).
In fact, this one is something i been saying for a long time already: "they will retire Ash the day he win more than one league".
In anime/shows, time is irrelevant. How long has Doraemon run? And yet Nobita is still a 4th grade student. It's just the problem of 'no time progression' weighs more on long series.

It's just funny that if you combine the total runtime of all Pokemon episodes and then consider how much we don't see during Ash's journey, mostly the time spent sleeping and travelling, then the math will show that he should've aged at least a few years.
God, it's just... Surreal to know that after 25 years, Ash's story's finally ending.
I've only ever watched some episodes sporadically over several years, but I grew up with Pokemon and Ash. My sisters grew up collecting the cards and watching the show back in the 90's. My young cousin watches the show right now.
And now... And now his story is ending... He's finished his journey... And now? What does the future hold for the show? With Ash's journey over, who will people grow up with now?
It's been a long run for Pokemon, Ash managed to inspire and entertain almost 3 generations of viewers.
Can't believe it's been almost 26 years, let's hope he doesn't suddenly become 26 years older like some sort of crazy voodoo curse, now that he's retiring from the show.

I do hear speculations that the new protagonist girl may be his daughter. So in that show we may indeed see 36 years old Ash.

I don't think the new protagonists would be related to Ash. Sure, the boy do look like him but the only way that would happen would be Ash or Go marrying Kiawe's sister, and the hairstyle on the girl looks like May's but the shading says Geeta.

No one likes Ash Ketchum/Satoshi. Good riddance. People stopped caring 2 decades ago, though it's funny how Satoshi winning the Aloha League made mainstream headline news in late 2019. It really is funny.
