Bearing in mind I would sooner drink ditch-water, I sincerely doubt 'Foreign' versions of anything are ipso facto inferior to any original, just different.

As for cocaine, that period was when they decided that Cocaine, Opium, which they had [ rightly in my opinion ] just been selling alongside the British, and Laudanum, vying with Gin as Mother's Little Helper, would perish from the earth --- not really a winning proposition; but puritanism will have its way.

Not that I want Cirno to take any of these things, nor her friends in the Scarlet Mansion. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Patchy smoked a pipe of opium every now and again.

Ignoring the Vin Mariani thing cause I couldn't find anything about American reaction to the resurfacing of the beverage in the last decade; are you actually suggesting that the highly dangerous drugs cocaine, opium, and laudanum, all of which are illegal or restricted in most countries, shouldn't be illegal, and only puritans would be against these drugs being in free circulation? In America, all three are available for prescriptive medical use, which is actually less restrictive than most countries, where they're just banned outright.

But any chance for you to dunk on those stupid Americans, right?

Not at all, just their government. America has many fine things.

Vin Mariani was first prohibited in Georgia USA in 1885, as soon as coca cola was invented by a Georgian.

As for drugs I have never taken any in my life; but I don't think any prohibition is valid: those 3 drugs are only universally illegal because America and China began the whole war on drugs thing before WWI from missionary zeal (both Mao and Chiang were very keen on eliminating drug users ).

I'm sorry for people who have their lives ruined, but half of that is down to criminalization and the ensuant massive jailing of Americans: and if they die, they shouldn't have taken drugs.
