$2 says she has to pay for her own class supplies, too.
No doubt.
Probably not as screwed up US' 94% rate though. That being said we ain't lagging far behind either here in Ontario; over half of the elementary school teachers were paying for school supplies out of pocket in 2020. Given Covid and the way Ford has been purposely sabotaging every public institution I'd be surprised if it wasn't at the very least 70% in 2022.

Your teachers pay for class supplies with their own money?!?
Your teachers pay for class supplies with their own money?!?
Schools are super under-funded in the states, and apparently in Canada too. My cousin quit not too long ago because between the low pay, lack of funding for materials, and psychopathic parents, it just wasn't worth it anymore. Which is a real shame, because he liked teaching.

Oh, it's specifically a Ontario problem. The premier is literally starving public systems to the point of failure so privatized ones from his donors and friends can be pushed in. Bill 124, using nonwithstanding clause on cupe, selling environmentally protected landed to developers for dirt cheap then declaring the land no longer protected, Bill 39, the shit list goes on.

The schools yes, the school boards? Oh no, they take all the grant money and keep it. that's why half the public schools here in Canada barely have working heaters, air conditioning and buildings that are decades out of date for maintenance.

That's not even the worse thing that happens in schools up here in Ontario. I'm not a teacher, but my time in elementary school as a student was positively nightmarish: A substitute teacher we had started crying because our class was so unruly, our principal was arrested for embezzlement, the bathrooms were filthy and barely maintained, bullies were rarely punished (with little more than a stern warning even after years of bullying), bully victims were suspended (even if they were suffering from mental, emotional, or health issues like myself), some kid defecated on the floor (In the boys washroom, right inside one of the stalls), and one of my classmates was nearly arrested for inappropriately touching the kindergarteners (the school made a deal with him and he was expelled instead).
Never thought I'd see a discussion about the Ontario education system here of all places but yeah, it's horribly underfunded and (unsurprisingly) there are fewer teachers than there used to be willing to work for such low pay. A few years ago I had a high school math class a few years ago which had no teacher the ENTIRE SEMESTER, with revolving door supply teachers (By my count we had 16 separate supplies of dubious quality by the end of the year) or just no teacher at all with a guy from another class handing out worksheets and then fucking off to do His real job. While I've never experienced it personally this problem seems to be most acute with french teachers (which are mandatory up to grade 9 in Canada), and almost everyone I know has a story of a french teacher simply not existing for part of or the whole semester. The school was also hundreds of students over capacity, with overflow solutions as complex as "Teach them in the Car park idk". As other posters have stated this problem is mostly caused by the Ford government not giving enough money to schools and teachers, and no-one voting out the Ford's for reasons too complex for Me to really understand or articulate on a Danbooru thread but yeah, shits fucked mate.
