So a doll master controls a Doll that controls a bigger doll? That reminds me of a doujin where Alice makes a "Control doll" to control other dolls to lighten her workload.

In many fanworks where Alice has learned how to put a soul into a doll and make them autonomous, this function is often served by Shanghai, her first doll.

Sometimes it seems clear that fanon Shanghai has an independent consciousness.
But in ambiguous cases, I get weird pleasure from thinking that Alice uses Shanghai like here just to show off, or like in the puppet theater scene of post #418210 to deal with feelings she cannot face otherwise.
While Fanon is allowed to take liberties with things(everyone Yuri anyone?) i sometimes forget Shanghai doesnt have a soul of her own in canon due to the mass amounts of doujins that not only give Shanghai her own personality, but even the rest of Alice's dolls. Actually, the few doujins that stick a bit of canon in their work, it seems they go to such lengths just to say they are sticking to canon info. Every Doujin i read that didnt give automanous dolls to Alice, they pretty much dedicated a full page just to remind you that the dolls dont have a soul of their own.
Thank you for the analysis, Tetsamaru. I have not read enough lengthier Touhou doujin comics to have a picture that clear.
On more note: I just love Shanghai's air of concentration there. It is fun enough as is... but the idea that Alice is consciously making a lifeless puppet look like that is super fascinating.
