I've been asking this for a while now...why are eyepatches so appealing? Is it because it adds a factor of badass or moe? Or both?

Speaking of pirates, many pirates wore eyepatches on perfectly functional eyes due to the almost pitch-blackness of below decks. This was, of course, before elecric lighting, and torches were obviously a bad idea.
